Blue Cave Adventure - private boat tour in Bay of Kotor Montenegro

Blue Cave Adventure

4 hours from 320€ per boat

This is the classic outer-bay route, run in 3 hours from your dock anywhere in Bay of Kotor. You see four of the most photographed sights in the bay — Our Lady of the Rocks, a Yugoslav-era submarine tunnel built into the mountain, Mamula Island fortress, and the Blue Cave itself. We dock for 20 minutes at Our Lady of the Rocks (€5 per person church entrance, paid on the island), cruise into the submarine tunnel by boat, circle Mamula for a panoramic view of the fortress (no stop — the island is now privately operated by the Banyan Tree hotel), and finish by entering the Blue Cave to see the famous electric-blue interior. Swimming happens just outside the cave for safety; the colour is just as vivid from the water there. Best run in the morning when the sun angle through the underwater entrance produces the strongest blue. Snorkel masks are provided.

Is this tour right for you?

Best for adventure-minded travellers who want all of the bay's outer landmarks in a single half-day, plus a swim in the famous blue water. Private to your group: from €320 per boat for up to 6 guests, +€20 per additional guest up to 8. Welcome for kids from 2 years and up. We strongly recommend a morning departure — the Blue Cave glow is most vivid before noon.

Tour Itinerary

1

Our Lady of the Rocks (20 min)

Dock at the famous man-made island. Explore the baroque church, see the Tripo Kokolja paintings, and visit the small maritime museum. €5 per person church entrance, paid on the island (not included).

2

Submarine Tunnel

Cruise into the Yugoslav-era submarine tunnel carved deep into the mountainside. Originally built to hide submarines from the air, we enter by boat for an atmospheric, slightly eerie look at one of the bay's most unusual landmarks.

3

Mamula Island (panoramic)

Circle the imposing 19th-century circular fortress at the bay entrance. We don't dock — the island is now operated as a Banyan Tree luxury hotel — but a full loop gives you the silhouette and the best photo angles.

4

Blue Cave

Enter the cave by boat to see the electric-blue interior glowing from the underwater entrance. Swimming happens just outside the cave for safety; the colour is just as vivid from the water there. Snorkel masks are provided.

Frequently asked questions

How many guests can join the Blue Cave tour?

Up to 8 guests total. The €320 base price covers up to 6; each additional guest above 6 is €20, with a maximum of 8 onboard. The price is per boat, not per person.

Do we actually go inside the Blue Cave?

Yes — we enter the cave by boat. The main entrance is wide enough for our speedboats. Once inside, you see the famous blue glow up close and have a few minutes to take photos before we exit and stop just outside for swimming.

Can we swim inside the Blue Cave?

For safety, swimming happens just outside the cave entrance — not inside. There is constant boat traffic in the cave during peak hours and the water inside is deep with limited visibility. The blue colour is just as vivid in the water immediately outside, which is where we anchor for the swim.

What is the best time of day for the Blue Cave?

Morning, ideally before noon. The blue glow depends on the angle of sunlight through the underwater entrance. From mid-morning to just past midday the angle is optimal and the colour is at its most intense.

Do we stop on Mamula Island?

No — the island is now operated as a private luxury hotel by Banyan Tree, so general visitors can't dock there. We circle the fortress for a panoramic view and the best photo angles.

Do we actually enter the submarine tunnel?

Yes. The tunnel was built during the Yugoslav era to hide naval submarines from aerial reconnaissance. The entrance is large enough for our speedboats to cruise inside. It's atmospheric, dim, and unlike anywhere else in the bay.
